I once heard somebody say that there were two kinds of sports photographers: “Crunch” photographers who were adept at catching every last moment be it the gruesome tackle, the quirky blink of an eye instance, or the game winning play, and “Style” photographers who were best at milking the light and creating the most beautiful, graceful image.  While I’ve always considered myself to be more of the latter, during my time at the papers I worked very hard to try to bridge the gap between the two styles to become a more well rounded photographer.  While I still have a lot of work to do, I know that this image above is definitely something I probably would have missed 2 years ago because at the time I might not have thought to shoot a routine grounder during the 3rd inning in harsh mid afternoon light.  But I’ve been coaching myself to be a more disciplined shooter, and not let things slip by my lens anymore.
